by

Hans-Hermann Hope

Prof. Emeritus of Economics, University of Nevada and distinguished Fellow at the Mises Institute

During the event, professor Hans-Hermann Hoppe will launch the Romanian translation of his book,

A Theory of Socialism and Capitalism

Born in Peine, Germany, he attended the Universität des Saarlandes in Saarbrücken, and the Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, studying philosophy, sociology, history, and economics. His doctoral studies began with Marxist thought, under Jürgen Habermas as his Ph.D advisor. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Goethe-Universität in 1974. He was then a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor from 1976 to 1978. He earned his Habilitation in Foundations of Sociology and Economics from the Goethe-Universität in 1981. He taught at several German universities as well as at the Johns Hopkins University Bologna Center for Advanced International Studies, Bologna, Italy. In 1986, he moved from Germany to the United States, to study under Murray Rothbard. He remained a close associate until Rothbard’s death in January 1995.

An Austrian school economist and libertarian/anarcho-capitalist philosopher, he is Professor Emeritus of Economics at UNLV, Distinguished Fellow with the Ludwig von Mises Institute, Founder and President of The Property and Freedom Society, and was the Editor-at-Large of the Journal of Libertarian Studies (2005-2009).

He is the author of several widely-discussed books and articles, in which he uses the ethics of argumentation, a Habermasian principle, as the foundation for self-ownership and private property as ethical principles. Among these works, we mention the thought-provoking Democracy: The God that Failed. His numerous articles on philosophy, economics and the social sciences have been translated into 22 languages.
